Photo Shoot - Lindy Dobbins & The Red Velvet Manx
Lindy and I started talking about doing a shoot for her band about 6 months ago. At the time they were looking for a new drummer, then Thanksgiving was approaching and before we knew it Christmas was upon us. We met over a Sushi lunch to discuss the project just before Christmas and after much discussion about a location we settled in on a garage build- out that her grandfather had completed. She warned me it had a pool table in the center of the room but thought it had a couple of interesting corners that would make a good background and suit the type of shot she wanted.
I'm usually up for any challenge so we agreed that as long as her grandmother didn't mind having a bunch of folks in her garage we'd go for that.
The room was a little smaller than I'd anticipated but it had a nice high ceiling. Shadows and shine are always an issue with high gloss paint on the walls and one wall had this exactly. Worked on the lighting as much as I could, bouncing strobes off the ceiling, using modeling lights, reducing ambient light as much as possible and finally got a shot or two that somewhat worked.
On the other side of the room there is a corner that had some darker panels that would absorb some light. This proved to be a better location and resulted in some better shots. Modeling lights for the subject and muted strobes from a distance provided the fill light. The white balance was left on the warm side as these are for band promotion and will probably be brought into photoshop for integration into some design work. Two members of the band are into graphic design so the sky will be the limit on what they do with the images. I can't wait to see their creativity.
But in the meantime I'm happy with the result we achieved. Here's a link to the gallery.
Have a look and feel free to let me know what you think!
Cheers,
Monty
